UKIP’s trouble with young activists flared up again today as Milton’s little birds report that Alexander Phillipps, who was leading the Leeds University UKIP Society, has today resigned from the party. Once again the issue is UKIP’s stance of equal marriage and homosexuality. UKIP are the only major UK political party to oppose equal marriage, and while the party claims to have no issue with members of the LGBT community Milton has before reported on grassroots attempts to remove senior members of the party for strongly homophobic remarks.
Leeds had looked to be a growing stronghold for UKIP after 40% of Leeds Conservative Future committee quit the Tories and joined UKIP last year. Milton understands that all of these defectors have since left UKIP, predominantly over their stance on equal marriage.
UKIP’s treasurer Stuart Wheeler admitted a few years ago that the average membership age was 72, after the trouble Young Independence has been having Milton wonders where it is now…
