The Institute of Economic Affairs’, Ryan Bourne, took on French economist Thomas Piketty in a one on one debate on Channel 4.
Piketty’s recent work, Capital in the 21st Century, has sold more than 80,000 books in its opening two months and has been #1 on the Amazon best sellers list.
During this debate, Thomas Piketty conceded that in some cases economic inequality – which was the focus of his recent work – was not always undesirable, and in some circumstances can be of useful to economic growth. Piketty also conceded that the long-term evolution of inequality and the concentration of wealth in Europe, historically, was not as extreme as that of the United States.
