Louise Mensch has never been afraid of being controversial. The former MP has done very well from the publicity she garners from sharing her opinions. Mensch however demonstrated some rather surreal hypocrisy today tweeting out her support of the journalists who uncovered the Watergate scandal.
Journalists Woodward and Bernstein uncovered the Government scandal due to tip offs and information from official sources who had access to information they were not meant to share.
Mensch’s view of Watergate alone is hardly controversial, but her hypocrisy comes with her attitude to Ed Snowden, David Miranda and Glenn Greenwald. Greenwald uncovered a Government scandal due to tip offs and information from official sources (Snowden) who had access to information he was not meant to share.
While Mensch backed Watergate she has been scathing in her attacks on Greenwald and his partner David Miranda, who was held for 9 hours under laws meant to stop terrorists, when he was suspected of carrying files leaked by Snowden.
Both scandals have been major embarrassments for the US Government, both uncovered Government spying on others to garner information they shouldn’t have access to. While Nixon only spied on the opposition party, resigned and apologised, President Obama spied on the whole nation, has not resigned or apologised.
For Louise Mensch to back espionage journalism in the lesser case when it was politicians being spied on but not the larger case when it was a whole nation having their information stolen is shocking double standards. Milton notes that Ms Mensch is hardly known for her political consistency but to condemn one and praise the other takes his breath away.
