Earlier this evening Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn spoke at a Parliamentary event organised by the Muslim Engagement and Development group (MEND).

This group sounds pretty innocuous but unfortunately it isn’t. According to a recent report by the Henry Jackson Society the group has ‘has regularly hosted illiberal, intolerant and extremist Islamist speakers at public events. This has included those who have promoted Jihad, homophobia and anti-Semitism, as well as those who have legitimised the killing of adulterers and “infidels”’. The full report can be viewed here – the two page executive summary is well worth a read.
Perhaps most controversially the report notes that a senior figures within MEND ‘legitimised the killing of British troops in Iraq’.
MEND also seem to have a bit of an obsession with Britain’s ‘Israeli lobby’. Here are two tweets from last year on the subject:
And here’s a video of MEND’s founder, Sufyan Ismail boasting about ‘battering’ Britain’s ‘Israeli lobby’.
It’s worth noting that Corbyn can hardly use ignorance as an excuse. When they found out who MEND really are, following sustained media outrage, Anna Soubry, Crispin Blunt, Sir Ed Davey and Joanna Cherry all pulled out of the event. Yet Corbyn still decided to turn up.
So Corbyn decides to attend an event held by a group which hosts ‘extremist Islamist speakers’ yet refuses to attend a dinner to commemorate the Balfour Declaration. Remarkable.
