Royal Holloway Student’s Union to debate boycotting the Queen on Campus

Royal Holloway Student’s Union are heading into an interesting debate tonight – one which will certainly ruffle some feathers.

A press release from SURHUL (Student’s Union Royal Holloway, University of London) displays LGBT Officer, Jack Saffery-Rowe’s motion for RHUL’s Student Union to boycott The Queen on the 14th of March as she delivers a Professorship of Music to the University’s music department.

The motion argues “that the role of the Monarchy in Britain is not merely ceremonial, but actively political,” and that “members of the Royal Family have regularly used their privileges to veto parliametary [sic] legislation and to interfere in the democratic process.”

The motion will be debated at the Student Union’s General Meeting and can be watched live from 6pm – 9pm.
