‘The Hobbit’: An Unexpected Guide

Here at The Backbencher we’re Hobbit mad and like the rest of the country we can’t wait for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to hit UK cinemas next Thursday. So, in preparation for the big event we thought it was time we all brushed up on everything we know so far about Peter Jackson’s latest delve into Middle Earth.

Warner Bros. have released so many trailers, posters and TV spots that it’s hard to keep up and there are some really juicy pieces of Hobbit trivia in them so it’s worth checking everything out before you go see the film in all its glory.

To get you started here’s all the posters for the main characters in The Hobbit. Some you should recognised (and if you don’t then why not!?) but it’s time to get all those dwarfs in order otherwise you’ll spend the first half of the movie trying to work out who’s who.

First Trailer: Our first taste of The Hobbit set the scene of the film making it clear that an old Bilbo would be telling the story to Frodo before the events of The Lord Of The Rings. We’re also properly introduced to Martin Freeman as the young Bilbo Baggins for the first time.

Second Trailer: The second trailer is narrated by Gandalf and explains why the dwarfs are on their mission and how Bilbo becomes a part of it. We also get our first glimpse of the Elves and Bilbo’s first meeting with Gollum where we know he’ll find the Ring.

TV Spot: Most film TV spots don’t show us anything we haven’t seen before in the trailers but it’s worth watching this one as it recaps how the epic story began. Plus, keep an eye out for your first look at the trolls who are mentioned in The Lord Of The Rings.

Film Clip: This clip from The Hobbit sneakily made it’s way online and shows how Bilbo original comes by his sword Sting which he gives to Frodo in The Lord Of The Rings.

TV Spot: This TV spot is one of the latest to be released and gives us the briefest of glimpses of the dragon Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who we’ll see more of in the second and third films. This video also shows a more confident Bilbo unlike previous trailers.

For a more detailed look at some of the main characters and scenes from Bag End, Rivendell and more take a look at these movie stills released by Warner Bros.

As well as the trailers and TV spots Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. have also been uploading behind the scenes footage, video blogs and production videos to allow fans to get a look at what went into the making of one of the biggest films of the year. There are far too many to show them all but here are some of our favourites.

Featurette: This video shows the filming of the dinner party scene in The Hobbit where the dwarfs have arrived at Bag End and proceed to have a food fight. It’s one of the most important scenes in the film as it introduces the dwarfs and you can watch the actors talking about its filming.

Production Video: This video that Peter Jackson posted on his Facebook page is a bit long but it’s definitely worth a watch as it shows him and the cast at Comic Con in San Diego in March. Not only can you watch Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood taking to the stage to thunderous applause, but you can also take a look at the exclusive footage that was shown at Comic Con.

World Premiere: And finally you can watch the stars take to the red carpet for the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Wellington including footage of them talking about the making of the film and what it means to them.

Now we’re all caught up with everything Hobbit-related we’re going to go double-check we’ve definitely booked our tickets and leave you with this fan-made trailer of all the footage released so far in chronological order. This’ll make sure you’re definitely ready to join in the adventure on December 13th!
